‘Kappan’s condition is serious and he needs better treatment’, UDF MPs write to CJI

Eleven MPs of the opposition UDF on Sunday sought the intervention of Supreme Court Chief Justice N V Ramana for an urgent hearing of the case of journalist Siddique Kappan, arrested while on his way to Hathras, where a young Dalit woman died after being allegedly gang raped.

In a letter to the CJI, the MPs of the Congress led UDF said that Kappan, who is incarcerated by the Uttar Pradesh Police in Mathura, sustained serious injuries after he fell unconscious in Mathura Jail.

“He is presently suffering from COVID-19 and has been admitted in the Mathura Medical College Hospital in Mathura. His condition is serious and he needs better treatment. We, therefore, implore you to save Shri Kappans life by giving him an urgent hearing in the matter requesting for issue of necessary orders to shift him from Mathura Medical College Hospital to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi”, said the signatories.

They said Kappan, the Delhi based journalist from Kerala, was unable to consume food and had been denied use of a toilet for four days, due to which he has become extremely weak.

“It is shocking beyond words that such a grave violation of human rights is happening in our India, a democracy. Therefore, we beseech you Sir, as the guardian of our Constitution, to examine this matter time sensitively and to provide an interim relief to Shri Siddique Kappan until the disposal of his Habeas Corpus application”, the letter said.

The signatories included K Sudhakaran, K Muraleedharan, E T Mohammed Basheer, V K Sreekandan, Ramya Haridas, Benny Behanan MP, T N Prathapan, Dean Kuriakose, Anto Antony, N K Premachandran and P V Abdul Wahab.

Kappan was arrested on October 5, 2020 while he was on his way to Hathras, home to the young Dalit woman who died after being gangraped, allegedly by four upper-caste men.

‘BJP-RSS shooting the messenger’, Rahul Gandhi extends support to journalist Kappan’s family

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi extended his support to the family of Siddique Kappan, a journalist from Kerala who was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh police while on his way to Hathras, saying the scribe deserved full protection and medical support. Gandhi also targeted the Yogi Adityanath government, alleging that both the BJP and the RSS had shown their lack of courage by shooting the messenger.

“I extend my support to the family of Siddique Kappan. He deserves full protection and medical support. RSS-BJP show their lack of courage by shooting the messenger. Stop the crime, not the reportage,” Gandhi wrote on Facebook as he shared a press statement of the Editors’ Guild of India.

In its statement, the press body has demanded that Kappan be given proper medical treatment at the earliest and that he be treated with dignity. The Guild also urged the Supreme Court to urgently take up the pending writ petition and give him a fair trial.

Kappan, arrested on October 5 last year while on the way to Hathras which was home to a young Dalit woman who died after being gang-raped allegedly by four upper-caste men, is currently lodged in Medical College Hospital, Mathura, after he was found positive for COVID-19 on April 21. The journalist has been slapped with the stringent UAPA in connection with an alleged conspiracy to trigger riots over the rape case.

Chloé Zhao wins Best Director in Oscar for Nomadland

Chloé Zhao has won the Oscar for directing Nomadland, becoming the first woman of color to win the award and the second woman to win (Katheryn Bigelow, was the first). Zhao was also the first woman to get four Oscar nominations in a single year, in the Best Film Editing, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Director and Best Picture categories.

Nomadland became the big winner at the 2021 Oscars, taking home the most number of awards (three) including Best Picture, Best Director (for Chloé Zhao), and Best Actress (Frances McDormand). The 2021 Oscars winners were fairly spread out to be fair, with six films grabbing two prizes apiece: The Father (for Best Actor for Anthony Hopkins and Best Adapted Screenplay), Judas and the Black Messiah (including Best Supporting Actor for Daniel Kaluuya), Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, David Fincher’s old Hollywood drama Mank (including Best Cinematography), Pixar’s Soul (including Best Animated Feature Film), and Amazon’s Sound of Metal (including Best Film Editing and Best Sound).

Amongst studios, Netflix was the leading winner at the 2021 Oscars with seven awards but none of those wins came in any of the traditionally big categories. In fact, it was old guard Disney (five) which ruled that department, thanks to Nomadland picking three of the big four (Picture, Director, Actor and Actress). Warner Bros. (three for Tenet, and Judas and the Black Messiah) was next, with both Sony Pictures (The Father) and Amazon Studios (Sound of Metal) garnering two apiece. Netflix’s Mank had the most nominations (10) but it fizzled out at the end.

Oxygen emergency in UP, dares Priyanka Gandhi after Yogi’s warning

Stating that there is an “oxygen emergency” in Uttar Pradesh amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday advised chief minister Yogi Adityanath to recognise the seriousness of the situation and immediately start working for saving the lives of people.

Adityanath, in his previous statement, warned those who are spreading rumors about oxygen shortage in the state and said properties of those spreading rumours of oxygen shortage will be seized.

Asserting that there is no shortage of oxygen in any private or public COVID-19 hospital in Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath on Saturday had said that the state government would conduct an audit of the life-saving gas in collaboration with various institutes.

Tagging a media report on his remarks, Priyanka Gandhi, in a tweet in Hindi, said, “Just imagine yourself in the place of those patients who are told that they will not get admission due to lack of oxygen. ”Oxygen is low, take your patient”.”

Reacting to this, Gandhi tweeted: “Chief minister, there is oxygen emergency all over Uttar Pradesh. You have to put a case on me, seize the property, so do. But for the sake of god, recognise the seriousness of the situation and immediately start the work of saving the lives of the people.

‘Siddique Kappan’s life is in danger’, KUWJ files petition in Supreme Court

Journalist Siddique Kappan, who is lodged in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura prison since October 2020, has been hospitalised after he collapsed in the bathroom and sustained injuries on April 20. The Delhi-based journalist from Kerala also tested positive for coronavirus on April 21. He is currently under treatment at a hospital in Mathura. Following this, the Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ), which has been fighting for Siddique Kappan’s release, filed a petition in the Supreme Court on Thursday, to shift him to All India Institute Of Medical Science (AIIMS) or the Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi immediately.

Siddique Kappan, a freelance journalist for a Kerala news website, was arrested on October 5, 2020, while he was on his way from Delhi to Hathras, along with three others in a vehicle. He was en route to report on the alleged gangrape and murder of a 19-year-old Dalit woman in Hathras when he was stopped by the Uttar Pradesh police. The officials seized his mobile phone, laptop and some literature, which they claimed “could disrupt peace.” They accused Siddique of having links with the Popular Front of India (PFI). He has been lodged in the Mathura prison since his arrest.

According to advocate Wills Mathew, who is representing KUWJ, Siddique Kappan has been ill for the past week. In the petition filed in the Supreme Court, KUWJ alleged that over 50 inmates of the Mathura prison have COVID-19. They also alleged that the prison severely lacks basic facilities, including drinking water, so much that they have to drink water from the toilet. “This has been seriously affecting the health and hygiene, which is leading to a major disaster. As of today, Siddique Kappan’s life is in danger for all reasons,” said the petition, as reported by Live Law.

“The wife of Siddique Kappan, came to know that…Kappan is chained like an animal in a cot of the Medical College Hospital, Mathura, without mobility, and he neither could take food, nor could go to toilet for the last more than 4 days, and is very critical,” read the plea by Advocate Wills Mathews.

“He called me today from somebody’s phone. He told me that the hospital authorities are not allowing him to go to the toilet. He is handcuffed to the bed and is not allowed to move. He is urinating in a bottle. He is a human being. He has at least to go to the toilet.” Raihanath, wife of Siddique Kaappan told The Week on Saturday.

Covaxin will cost ₹ 600 per dose for state govts, ₹ 1,200 for private hospitals; Costlier than Covishield

Covaxin, the Covid-19 vaccine developed by Bharat Biotech, will be available at a price of Rs 600 per dose for state governments and Rs 1,200 per dose for private hospitals.

Announcing the prices, Bharat Biotech on Saturday said Covaxin will be also be exported and the export price would be between $15-20 (Rs 1,123 to Rs 1,498 approximately).

The announcement comes days after the Serum Institute of India announced price of its Covishield vaccine. At present, apart from Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin, Covishield is the only other Covid-19 vaccine which is being used in India’s vaccination drive.

The Serum Institute has fixed Covishield’s price at Rs 400 for state governments and Rs 600 for private hospitals. The vaccine would also be made available to the central government at Rs 400 per dose once the existing contract for Rs 150 a dose for the first 100 million doses ends.

In a statement, Bharat Biotech said it is “deeply concerned” by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic in India and rest of the world.

“Bharat Biotech is honoured to develop, manufacture and supply Covaxin for India’s vaccine rollout at Rs 150 per dose, which is distributed for free by the Government of India. We would like to state that more than 50 per cent of our capacities have been reserved for central government supplies,” the statement said.

Justifying the high price for its Covaxin, Bharat Biotech said it is an “inactivated and highly purified vaccine” and its manufacturing was expensive due to “very low process yields”.

“All costs towards product development, manufacturing facilities and clinical trials were deployed primarily using internal funding and resources of Bharat Biotech,” the statement added.

Bharat Biotech said recovering the costs is essential to facilitate further innovation towards making other vaccines such as Intranasal Covid-19, Chickengunya, Zika, Cholera, and others.

Bharat Biotech and the Serum Institute of India have announced price of their Covid-19 vaccines after the government opened up inoculation to all citizen above 18 years of age starting May 1.

Vaccination will be free in Chhattisgarh, says CM Bhupesh Baghel

Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Friday said his government will bear the cost of COVID-19 vaccination in Chhattisgarh if the Centre refuses to do the same.

Replying to the debate on the motion of thanks on the governor’s address in the Assembly, Baghel said, instead of focusing on only three crore people, the Centre should provide free coronavirus vaccine to all 135 crore people in India.

“Are you going to give free vaccines to Bihar only? People of Chhattisgarh have caused loss to you (by electing Congress) so you will not give free vaccine here? We don’t have a dearth of funds. We have kept (funds) for it,” he said.

“If the Union government refuses (to provide free vaccine to all), then we would facilitate COVID vaccination of people in the state at our own expenses,” Baghel said.

Reiterating his government’s decision to use Covaxin vaccine in the state only after its third phase of trial, the CM questioned why Covaxin had been administers to only one per cent of people inoculated in 11 states so far.

Baghel said the Central government had earlier agreed to take 60 lakh tonnes of rice from Chhattisgarh in the central pool for the Kharif marketing year 2020-21, but, as of now, permission has been given to deposit only 24 lakh tonnes.

He asked the opposition BJP to take up the matter with the Centre.

The CM said his government’s new industrial policy enacted in 2019 ensured the establishment of 1,249 units in the state, while 104 MoUs signed for mega industrial projects would lead to a capital investment of ₹42,417 crore.

Vaccines will be free, CM Pinarayi Vijayan reiterates the promise

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan Wednesday reiterated that the state would provide Covid 19 vaccines to all people free of cost.

Vijayan told reporters that people, across age groups, would get vaccine shots free of cost. “I have already stated in the past vaccination would be free in the state. I am not in the habit of changing my opinion occasionally,” he said.

Referring to the Union government’s new policy on vaccine distribution, Vijayan said the Centre has the responsibility of supplying vaccines to states. Federal governments have been asked to get vaccines from the manufacturers at a price, he said, adding that it would create financial burden on states.

About his letter to the PM on reconsidering the new policy on vaccine distribution and providing states the required quantity of vaccines free of cost, the chief minister said, “The Centre has not stated its view on it. We have put forward a demand which is the same as that of the entire country,” he said.

Till Wednesday noon, Kerala had administered 62,36,961 doses of vaccine, thus covering 14. 88 per cent of its population. Of the administered shots, 54,40,907 were first doses.

Bengal CM Mamata will not campaign in Kolkata as Covid cases rise

In light of the surge of COVID-19 cases, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will not campaign in Kolkata for theongoing Assembly Elections anymore, said All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Derek O’Brien in a tweet on Sunday, 19 April.

The TMC supremo will only hold one symbolic 30-minute meeting on the last day of campaigning on 26 April, as per O’Brien.

The move comes as political parties are being criticized for holding massive rallies in West Bengal as India faces a second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the number of cases scaling new highs each day.
