“Utho rozaydaro”; Hearing and tasting a different Ramadan in Pakistan after Covid 19

It is that month of the year again when streets are filled with a bunch of people who are around with their brighten faces for the preparations of Ramadan, an Islamic month of the lunar calendar. It is that time when Muslims entail a sense of performing their obligatory duty to please their Lord to awake their dreary soul which has been lost somewhere in daily life affairs.

The moment the moon of Ramadan is sighted Muslims follows a certain paradigm for the spiritual purification and detoxification of their faith. Having said that according to the Holy Book of Muslims, Quran, in its second chapter it is mentioned that the month of Ramadan in which the Quran was revealed guidance for mankind, and Criterion (of right and wrong). This whole verse clearly gives the sign of how important this month is for Muslims.  Ramadan is observed through fasting from sunrise to sunset.

Before sunrise Muslims eat a pre-dawn meal known as Suhoor, and after sunset, they break their fast with a meal known as Iftar. Around 3 AM a man wearing white Tqaiyah, a skull cap and drum around his neck with the support of cord or leather strap, whom we call as Dhol Wala visits the inner-city areas and thunderously beats the drum with a loud call “Utho Rozaydaro”, a slogan which means wake up Muslims to fast. His voice is so booming and the beats of his drum are so rhythmic that the day he doesn’t come we feel a part of Suhoor is missing. It’s this centuries-old tradition that all the generations have witnessed. Our grandparents, parents, and now us, we all have been enjoying this musical call to get up. The sound is way too blaring yet melodious that by the end of the month all the residents of those areas where he comes, gift him a certain amount of money, clothes, or anything which they can afford.

For suhoor people who fast, usually eat Feni, a famous dish soaked in milk and eaten with a pinch of sugar, Qeema, a minced mutton curry dish with Paratha, a layered flatbread made with flour and ghee. Usually people also love to have Nihari, which is a thick flavored curry served in desi herbs and spices along with beef or chicken. Here in Pakistan it is an old tradition of having a glass full of Lassi, a blend of curd and water with mango, sweet or salty flavors. This is taken after having a pre-dawn meal which maintains the energy level of a body. Other than these succumbed eggs, omelet, boiled eggs are also eaten with a cup of tea, which is a must.

When people are done with having suhoor the very next thing they do is offer Fajr prayer. Women offer their supplication at home whereas men rush to Masajids. Faisal Masjid which is situated in the capital city, Islamabad, is considered as the largest Masjid of Pakistan. There a huge amount of people attend their daily supplications. It is very famous for its Ramadan congregations. Ramadan is not only a religious month but an ethereal lifestyle that Muslims all around the globe adopt. Nights and days are totally changed. In the daylight people offer Zuhar prayer then after a short gap they get ready for Asr prayer. Every other person who wants to please the almighty tries to follow the obligations instructed in the Holy Doctrine which is revealed upon them as a guide and they do everything to create the atmosphere of equality, brotherhood, and peace by abstaining bad actions and ill speech. Throughout the day Muslims spend their hours in religious recitations with the rosary in their hands and in supplications.

In Pakistan, people belong to different ethnicity and have different cultural traditions but when it comes to religious rituals they all have the same destination but, with different paths. In the south region of Pakistan, Sindh and Balochistan people are more into lambs, steak, fish, beef, or mutton which they have in Suhoor and Iftar. In the upper region, Punjab, people like to have heavy meals cooked in lots of spices with Lassi and paratha. In Lahore, there is a famous place that makes the world’s delicious Lassi, Feeka Lassi House. People from different areas of Punjab go there to have Lassi.  Whereas the people living in Khyber Pakhtoonkhuwa eat meals that keep them warm because of the cold weather and for that after they have Qewah which is made up of saffron, cinnamon, and cardamom with sugar or honey.

After spending a whole day in hunger Muslims finally get to break their Fast with Dates, after sunset. In Iftar every household is filled with  Pakoras, which is made in a spicy batter filled with vegetables. Then to add more beauty on our dining tables and to satisfy the taste buds we have Samosas, which is a triangular savoury pastry fried in ghee or oil, containing spiced vegetables or meat. As a sweet dish we make Fruit Chaat, in which we cut all the fruits and mix them with a pinch of Chaat Masala, a kind of desi spice with lemon. After a whole long day without having a drop of water our throats are dry and we are extremely thirsty so for that we make different kinds of juices every day just for the change in taste. Sometimes a red colour drink, Jaam-e-Shireen or a green colour drink Quis is made. We also add milk to it.

Our national fizzy drink is Pakola which we usually have when we eat lots of fried food.Right after the meal namaz is offered and after Isha, the last namaz of the day, Taraweeh is prayed in the night which is a non-obligatory prayer prayed in a congregation or at home.  During the whole month Masajids are filled with people, recitation of Naats and Hamds in beautiful voices with devotional couplets to praise the Lord, and his creation sparkle the dull nights. In Bhawalpur and Multan, Mehfil-e-Naat is organised every year to energise the inner faith of Muslims with beautiful recitations. Qawwals, in mystic Islamic devotional music sing Sufi poetries which make men spiritually ecstatic and they catch up into the euphoria of the metaphysical world. Qawwalis have always been everyone’s favourite. On television during the whole month of Ramadan Qawwalis are broadcasted.

In Karachi Arts Council, Shrine of Abdullah Shah Ghazi, and small towns like Orangi and Kharadar in Karachi and Shrine of Laal Shehbaaz Qalandar in Sehwan are the places where Qawwali nights take place. But, in the Ramadan of 2016 we lost a gem, Qawwal Amjad Sabri. A man who was loved by everyone, who’s Qawwalis was liked by every person irrespective of their sect. Each night is illuminated with the piousness of religious activities.

But, this year things are different now. Due to the spread of Covid19 and the occurrence of death people are maintaining social distance which is the only cure of this pandemic. No more supplications in the Masajids, no religious congregations, there will be vacant streets because markets will not be opened. This has made people so anxious that how they will change their pattern of religious rituals and cultural traditions. To maintain the social distance there will no invitations to family and friends for having Suhoor and Iftar together at home. This whole month of the festival has been overshadowed by the global chaos we all are facing.

‘Suspend central vista, bullet train projects; restore DA, Congress demands

The Congress has slammed the government for freezing the Dearness Allowance (DA) of central government employees and pensioners and demanded scrapping of the bullet train and central vista projects to save 30 per cent from the government expenditure.

“It is an insensitive and inhumane decision of the government to cut DA of central employees, pensioners and jawans who are serving the public while fighting coronavirus, instead of suspending the bullet train project and the Central Vista beautification project of lakhs of crores (of rupees),” Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.

Instead of cutting expenditure and wasteful expenses, government is hurting middle class employees and pensioners, said Randeep Surjewala, Chief spokesperson of the party. The government should scrap bullet train and central vista projects and save Rs 1,30,000 crore and divert the money to fight COVID-19, added Surjewala. The Congress said that the decision of the government will adversely impact the morale of the armed forces.

As part of the austerity drive, the Centre on Thursday announced suspension of DA hike for the central employees till July 2021. Moreover, ministries and departments have also been categorised for fixing a cap on their quarterly expenditure, limiting it to 15-20 per cent of the annual budget expenditure for FY21 in the first quarter.

Covid 19 and the Communal virus: Are some Indians more Indians than others?

A member of the UAE’s royal family Princess Hend Al Qassimi, warned the Indian national in UAE against his controversial anti-Islamic tweets. “Anyone that is openly racist and discriminatory in UAE will be fined and made to leave”, the Princess tweeted. As we all know, the Indian diaspora makes up a good population of the working class in the GCC countries, who earns double the income for same type of job in India.

The outbreak of corona virus (COVID-19) has created a global health crisis that made a deep impact on the way we perceive the world and everyday lives. The whole world is talking about uniting for humanity on one side; while on the other side a certain group of people are busy spreading fake news and communal hatred. Office of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday tweeted for unity and fraternity in fighting against the threat caused by the corona virus. His tweet read: “COVID-19 doesn’t see race, religion, colour, caste, creed, language or borders before striking. Our response and conduct thereafter should attach primacy to unity and brotherhood. We are in this together.”

But this doesn’t stop the right-wing extremists from spreading communal hatred and fake news through social media. One reason for the early cautioning by the Prime Minister could be the series of tweets emanated from the Middle East over the last few days. The UAE is one of India’s major source of remittances, where about 3 million Indian expats are based. While India shares healthy and sound relation with the Gulf countries, it is so unfortunate that the right-wing extremists are into such shameful acts.

The Arab countries which follow Monarchical system of governance and clearly Muslim dominated, treat its minority population without any discrimination. Let’s take the example of Kerala. The effects of Gulf migration made positive changes in the Economy and society of Kerala. The remittances from Middle East are a key source of income for Kerala’s economy. India was the top recipient of remittances worldwide in 2018. The remittances were boosted in parts by migrants from Kerala sending, which indirectly shows how important Gulf countries are for Indian economy. Keeping nothing of this in mind, some Hindutva preachers are ridiculing and scorning their religion and culture, after earning bread and butter from their land. To add with this, the BJP MP from Bangalore South came with the most disgraceful comment which humiliated the Arab womenfolk. Noora Al Ghurair, whose family runs the Al-Ghurair conglomerate, responded to Tejasvi Surya’s offensive and sexist comment by advising him not to visit the Arab land ever.Amid the growing resentment in the Arab world, the Indian ambassador to the country Mr. Pavan Kapoor tweeted, “India and UAE share values of non-discrimination on any grounds.”The biggest question here is that, Indians (mostly Hindus) are treated well in these countries. In return, how are Muslims being treated in India?

Ever since the Tablighi Jamaat conducted a meeting at their headquarters in Nizamuddin West, Delhi, late March, and some of them tested positive for COVID-19, certain media outlets were into overdrive blaming them-  and, by implication, Muslims-  for the spread of COVID-19 in India. Fake videos and social media posts gave Corona virus the nomenclature of “jihadi virus”, thereby widening the rift between Hindus and Muslims. The Islamophobic hashtags which are being circulated in social media is a clear indication of intentional discrimination towards the Muslim community, which is also the prime motive of the Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies. People are now talking about ‘Corona Jihad’, which is just the latest in a series of different forms of jihad that the media has talked about, and that have been elatedly accepted by the people.

This hate virus is highly contagious. This is not just a new phenomenon. But this has been a trend in India ever since the right-wing BJP government came into power. After BJP government got successfully re-elected for the second time, the minorities in India entered into a phase of grave danger. A series of events starting from the implementation of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC), the brutal police attack towards the students of Jamia Milia Islamia University and Aligarh Muslim University, the violence unleashed through police and right wing activists in JNU, arresting of student leaders like Sharjeel Imam, filing false cases against Muslim students, imposing UAPA on student leaders like Umar Khalid, Meeran Haider, and Safoora Zargar and putting them behind bars, to the most recent communalisation of Pandemic!

All these activities are having only a single motive; that is, to wash away the Muslim population from the country and to implement the Hindutva Policy over the Indian Constitution. For last seven decades, India has been holding it’s constitution along with, which promises equality to all. But Narendra Modi’s BJP is remaking the nation into one where some people count as more Indian than others. The danger posed by the BJP is that it is guiding India into an instability from which it may never recover.Today, when they use this Pandemic as a weapon to attack the Muslim population of the country, it poses a big question to us; ‘COVID-19 can be cured, but who will cure the communal virus? ‘

Covid 19: Trump suggests injecting disinfectant as treatment

US President Donald Trump has been criticised by the medical community after suggesting research into whether coronavirus might be treated by injecting disinfectant into the body. He also appeared to propose irradiating patients’ bodies with UV light, an idea dismissed by a doctor at the briefing. Another of his officials had moments earlier said sunlight and disinfectant were known to kill the infection. Mr Trump’s own public health agencies warn against bleach as a medicine.

During Thursday’s White House coronavirus task force briefing, an official presented the results of US government research that indicated coronavirus appeared to weaken more quickly when exposed to sunlight and heat. The study also showed bleach could kill the virus in saliva or respiratory fluids within five minutes and isopropyl alcohol could kill it even more quickly.

William Bryan, acting head of the US Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate, outlined the findings at the news conference. While noting the research should be treated with caution, Mr Trump suggested further research in that area. “So, supposing we hit the body with a tremendous – whether it’s ultraviolet or just very powerful light,” the president said, turning to Dr Deborah Birx, the White House coronavirus response co-ordinator, “and I think you said that hasn’t been checked but you’re going to test it. “And then I said, supposing you brought the light inside of the body, which you can do either through the skin or in some other way. And I think you said you’re going to test that too. Sounds interesting,” the president continued.

“And then I see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute. One minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning? “So it’d be interesting to check that.” Pointing to his head, Mr Trump went on: “I’m not a doctor. But I’m, like, a person that has a good you-know-what.”

He turned again to Dr Birx and asked if she had ever heard of using “the heat and the light” to treat coronavirus. “Not as a treatment,” Dr Birx said. “I mean, certainly, fever is a good thing, when you have a fever it helps your body respond. But I’ve not seen heat or light.”

“I think it’s a great thing to look at,” Mr Trump said. A journalist at the briefing questioned whether Mr Trump’s off-the-cuff remarks could spread dangerous disinformation to Americans.

Doctors warned the president’s idea could have fatal results. Pulmonologist Dr Vin Gupta told NBC News: “This notion of injecting or ingesting any type of cleansing product into the body is irresponsible and it’s dangerous.”It’s a common method that people utilise when they want to kill themselves.”

Kashif Mahmood, a doctor in Charleston, West Virginia, tweeted: “As a physician, I can’t recommend injecting disinfectant into the lungs or using UV radiation inside the body to treat COVID-19. “Don’t take medical advice from Trump.” John Balmes, a pulmonologist at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, warned that even breathing fumes from bleach could cause severe health problems.

Why Bernie Sanders’ dropping out of Presidential Election is a ‘LOSS’ for the political movement against Fascism?

Sanders political revolution against Trump’s Presidency is not limited on the concept of “resistance’ against his radical far-right policies, rather it was a collective political transformation to reimagine the U.S as country to be more egalitarian social democracy, that rejects corporate greed and extreme unequal society. Bernie Sanders ran the election campaign on the most progressive political agenda ever witnessed in the U.S political history.

On April 8 2020, Bernie Sanders dropped out from the democratic race for U.S President Election, scheduled for the upcoming November 2020. Since Bernie Sanders announced his plan to run for the upcoming U.S President Election, there has been a calculated attack from the right-wing political groups and centrist democratic party establishments. He advocated for the free and universal healthcare system, free higher educational system, reform in the criminal justice system, wealth tax for the billionaires, radical green new deal to combat climate change and other progressive agendas. However, the cynical corporate media establishments [a1] along with centrist democratic establishment build a heavy rhetorical smear against the Bernie Sanders and ridiculed his political agenda’s as radical socialist programmes, which are unfeasible and unattainable.

Bernie Sanders in its initial democratic primaries were leading as front-runner as Democratic nominee for the President, but suffered a couple of setbacks in the subsequent primaries and caucus. These setbacks along with the outbreak of Covid-19 in the U.S.A brought a heavy comedown on the political campaign of Bernie Sander, finally decided to drop out of the Democratic race for U.S Presidential Election and subsequently endorsed Joe Biden. Makes no mistake, the Bernie Sanders decision to withdraw from the Presidential Election is a huge loss in the rising global movement against the Neoliberal Fascist Governments in world. In this article, the author attempts to argue, why Bernie Sander did know, how to combat the rising fascist governments and offered alternative paradigm for building a vision of a robust egalitarian society with strong commitment to human rights.

The Economic Inequality and Rise of Neo-Fascist Movements in the Western World

There is no one straight jacket answer for the rising neo-fascist authoritarian governments throughout the world. Many people argue that ‘existing under-hidden racial and religious prejudice’ ‘refugee crisis in Europe’ ‘increasing fear and security risk in the wake of rising terrorist attacks’ are some of the examples cited for the growing rise of fascist movements in the Western Countries. These issues were much reflected as reasons for the win of ‘Trump Election’ and ‘Brexit in U.K’ which are some of the signs, that depicts the extent of global rise of fascist movements. However, Bernie Sanders understands fundamental root cause of growing neo-fascist movements in the world. While, we discuss the different factors contributing to the increasing ethno-nationalist political movements, one of the fundamental reasons or philosophy has never been discussed i.e Neoliberalism.

Neoliberalism is a philosophy conceptualize that the political system and establishment shall be governed by the ‘free market’, with economization of political discourses, where political values are replaced by rationale cost/benefit economic models. Neoliberalism is not limited to a mere absence of government regulations, but rather entire State should be formulated in consonance with the corporate interest, which includes massive tax cuts for rich, crushing of trade unions and labour protections, deregulation, privatization of essential public services. Although neo-liberalism as concept was existed early as 1940’s, it become new international order after the Margret Thatcher (Prime Minister of U.K) and Ronald Reagen (President of U.S) in early 1980’s. Since then, for almost 40 years, neo-liberalism was considered as unquestionable ‘international order’.

However, the consequence of neo-liberal political order was the ever-increasing income inequality. There has been consistent increase in economic inequality between poor and rich, in all the western countries by the reason of neo-liberal policies. The massive tax cuts for the billionaires and large corporations along with heavy under funding of vital public services in healthcare, public education, public transportations have pushed hundred millions of people into extreme poverty and economic insecurity. For a very long time, these massive economic inequality and neo-liberal policies were supported by both sides of political parties pushing millions of lower incomes working class people into a poverty and resentment to political establishments. The far-right movements attempt to address this massive resentment of working class and channelize these resentments and target the racial and religious minorities, refugees, immigrants with extreme hatred and fear. In the U.S alone, the top 1 percent of the populations owns more than half of the national wealth and constitutes one of the most unequal country in the world. This case of massive economic inequality in U.S is not isolated cases, there is ever increase in growth of economic inequality in western countries. In India too, the 10 percent of the populations owns 77 percent of the total national wealth. Therefore, there is growing resentment and lost in trust among the low- income middle class and poor person against the political establishments.

Bernie Sanders Challenges Political Ideology of Neo-liberalism

Bernie Sanders understands this fundamental root of fascism which is being produced by ruins of the modern neo-liberal capitalistic society. Bernie’s political campaign attempts to address the political issues of low-income working class and challenge the neo-liberal political philosophy of the State. His movement is actively built on the progressive values and strong commitment to a more equal, fair and just societal order. The remarkable feature of Sanders is his willingness to challenge the ‘status quo’ of the neo-liberal State policies, and provide an alternative which is willing to take political cost to address this massive income inequality and economical insecurities of low-income working class and poor people. Unlike any other democratic candidate, including Joe Biden (Presumptive Democratic Nominee for U.S President), their political action is limited to reverse the trump policies and go back to the Obama era.  However, Bernie Sanders refuses to conceptualize his political campaign on regaining the lost legacy of Obama, instead it provides a viable solution to long 40 years de-democratization of the U.S political system by the neo-liberal policies.

Further, Bernie Sanders acknowledges that the entire economic and political system is premised on neo-liberal order, there is no way a broken political order can be fixed by small changes and moderate legislations. Rather, Bernie Sanders understands that there is a need of political transformation on the role of Government over the welfare measures, and need to guarantee the basic social and economic rights such free and equal access to healthcare, increase social security, strong labour legislations etc.

The Creation of Broad Coalition of Multi-Racial and Multi-Generational to Defeat the Proto-Fascist Trump Era

Bernie Sanders campaign slogan “Fight for someone you don’t know” rightfully captures fundamental means to defeat the growing fascist political movements. The far-right totalitarian movement attempts to polarize the people on the basis of race, religions and other identities, with the purpose to break solidarity. Once the solidarity among the various disadvantaged minority groups is destroyed, it is easy for the right wing to create the structure of oppression. However, Sanders slogan is premised on building broadest possible coalition comprising of various racial minorities including African-American, Latinos, Arab-Muslims, South-Asian people, working class white people, young people to defeat the growing fascist regime of Trump in U.S.A. At the same time, the solidarity of various racial groups is not taken for granted, instead there is an active catering to the interest of the racial and other minorities. Although, the political movement didn’t manifest in the victory of Bernie Sanders to the power. Nevertheless, the Bernie Sanders political movement paves an ideal model for many countries, which can be inspired in the long movement and fight against the rising neo-fascist totalitarian movement in the world

Bernie Sanders Opposes the U.S Imperialist Foreign Policy and Replaced it with Unconditional Commitment to Human Rights

One of the most striking remark of his political campaign is the fierce and outright opposition to U.S.A imperialist foreign Policy. Most of the presidential nominees including Joe Biden is a strong supporter of the continuation of ‘status quo’ U.S foreign policy. In the post IInd World War Era, the U.S.A has increasingly engaged in many armed conflicts with different countries. The imperialism foreign policy ranges from the U.S support right wing armed groups to overthrow the democratically elected governments in Latin America to the disastrous Middle East wars conducted in post-cold war era. Unlike any other democratic or republic nominee, the Bernie Sanders has consistent history on being critical about the U.S imperialist foreign policies. Bernie Sanders is a few mainstream political leaders that have waged lonely moral and political fight against the U.S wars in the Middle East Countries. Bernie Sanders have opposed and voted against the U.S Invasion of Iraq in 2003, U.S armed involvement in the Libyan Crisis in 2011. Apart from these, the Sanders led the bipartisan group of senators in ending U.S aid and support to Saudi Arabia in the war against Yemen, which is considered to be one of the worst humanitarian disaster.

More importantly, Bernie Sanders has unconditionally affirmed that the U.S foreign policy shall be guided on the human rights principles. For a very long time, U.S.A had strong allies such as Saudi Arabia and Israel, which have a very worst records on the human rights protections. Yet, these authoritarian states have escaped the international scrutiny with the support of U.S.A. However, Bernie Sanders places a diametrically opposite position and places human rights as a central pillar in the foreign policy. This would have created unprecedented impact in the international order, which would eventually result in a stronger international compliance of basic human rights and freedoms.

Bernie Sanders political revolution on foreign policy does not end there, he is an ardent supporter of Palestinian people’s right to self-determination. Unlike the previous U.S presidents, who were strategically aligned and defended Israeli political interest in the conflict, where the Palestine people interest were viewed strictly through security prism of Israel, nonetheless Bernie Sanders stands exception in this category. Sanders is a proud Jew and at the same time, is a fierce critic of Israeli oppression and military occupation of the Palestine people. This could have brought some changes and accountability for the systematic and continuous human rights abuses in Occupied Territories of Palestine by the Israel

Sanders decision to drop from the Presidential Election returns to the ‘status quo’ foreign policy of the U.S.A, which continuously defends the allies and authoritarian government, with a past record of violating the values of human rights. Wherein, the human rights values are traded economic interest of the U.S.

I always had hope that Bernie Sanders would become the President of U.S.A. It might be of astonishment why do an Indian Muslim like me, working as lawyer in Delhi would be hoping for Bernie Sanders. The only answer is Bernie Sander as the President of U.S would have posed a larger international pressure and accountability of Indian State, for its violation of human rights obligations, especially in the context of increasing discrimination against the Indian Muslim minorities and also against India’s military occupation in the Indian-Administrated Kashmir. Further, in the midst of this rise of right wing fascist totalitarian movement across the world, he had became a beckoning hope to fight against the fascist governments. Bernie Sanders is among the few political leaders, that are willing to take political cost to fight and advocate for the marginalized community and had the political will to show the darker sides of neo-liberal corporate society.

The history made us bear witness of his unconditional and unwavering commitment to human rights and strong opposition to U.S military campaigns. He had fought some lonely fights and at last he built a political movement to give voice to the disfranchised people in the political spectrum. Even though, he has decided to drop from the Presidential Elections, his political movement continues and the slogan of “Fight for someone you don’t know’ still resonates in the street from India to U.S, in their fight against the fascist authoritarian regimes.

BJP spreading virus of communal prejudice, hatred: Sonia Gandhi

Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday accused the BJP of spreading the virus of communal prejudice and hatred in the country, asserting that “grave damage” is being done to social harmony. Addressing a meeting of the Congress Working Committee, Gandhi said it should worry every Indian and her party will have to work hard to repair this damage.

“Let me also share with you something that should worry each and every one of us as Indians. When we should be tackling the coronavirus unitedly, the BJP continues to spread the virus of communal prejudice and hatred,” she said. “Grave damage is being done to our social harmony. Our party, we will have to work hard to repair that damage,” the Congress president added. Former prime minister Manmohan Singh, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi and top Congress leaders attended the meeting through video conference.

This is the second time the CWC, the Congress’ top decision-making body, is meeting through video-conferencing in the past three weeks ever since the lockdown was enforced to contain the coronavirus threat. The Congress president said the coronavirus pandemic has increased disturbingly in the past three weeks and called upon the government to increase testing for it. Gandhi said she has written several times to the prime minister since the lockdown was enforced and suggested several measures and constructive cooperation.

“Unfortunately, they have been acted upon only partially and in a miserly way. The compassion, large-heartedness and alacrity that should be forthcoming from the central government is conspicuous by its absence,” she said. The Congress chief said the focus of the party must continue to be on successfully engaging with health, food security and livelihood issues. She claimed that around 12 crore people have lost jobs in the first phase of the lockdown and urged the government to provide a relief package for the MSME sector, which accounts for one-third of the GDP.

Gandhi called upon the government to provide food and financial security to migrants and jobless stranded at various places and were desperate to reach back home. “We have repeatedly urged PM there is no alternative to testing, tracing and quarantine. Unfortunately, testing still remains low, testing kits still in short supply,” she noted.

Gandhi said trade, commerce and industry have come to a virtual halt and crores of livelihoods have been destroyed. “The central government does not appear to have a clear idea on how the situation will be managed after May 3rd. A lockdown of the present nature after that date would be even more devastating,” she said.

Former prime minister Manmohan said the success of the lockdown will be judged finally on India’s ability to tackle COVID-19. He also said the cooperation between the Centre and states was key to success of the country’s fight against coronavirus.Singh said it is necessary to focus on a number of issues in the fight against coronavirus. The fight against COVID-19 would very much depend upon the availability of resources, he noted.

Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot said unless the central government comes forward to financially help states, the fight against COVID-19 will get weakened. “Unless there is a big financial package for states, how will normalcy return to states post lockdown,” he asked.

Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel said unless the Centre rises to the occasion and provides financial assistance to states, how will the fight against COVID-19 be won. Puducherry chief minister V Narayanasamy said the Union government has not given any assistance to the states.”How will states survive in times of crisis. We are not enemies but have to act and work together,” Narayanasamy said at the CWC meet.

Congress says Arnab gone insane, Youth Congress files cases

1

Congress leaders slammed TV anchor Arnab Goswami for his remarks aimed at party president Sonia Gandhi during a discussion on the Palghar lynching incident in which three persons, including two sadhus were killed by a mob.

While party’s chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala alleged that it was “deeply disgraceful that PM and BJP eulogise this brand of TV anchors”, former Karnatka chief minister Siddaramaiah tweeted that “#ArnabGoswami & @republic are examples of how NOT to do journalism”.

Surjewala in his tweet said, “Let PM remember that Sonia Gandhi has spent over 50 years of life in India, serving the country and being a witness to sacrifice of her mother-in-law and husband. But your favourite abusive anchors won’t bat an eyelid before hurling filth. Silence is acquiescence, Mr PM!”.

During a discussion on the Palghar incident, Goswami had marked on her Italian origin while saying, “I think Sonia is happy in her heart that saints are being attacked in a state where she has formed the government”.

Meanwhile, cases have also been filed by youth Congress leaders against the TV presenter in several states including in Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand.

Slamming Goswami, the editor-in-chief and owner of Republic TV, for his remarks against Gandhi, senior Congress leader and Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh said she has been a highly successful Congress president.

“Ridiculous attack by Arnab Goswami on Sonia Gandhi Ji in derogatory language is totally shameful and unacceptable. She was 22-years-old when she came to India and has been living here for 52 years, of which she has dedicated most of her life to the service of the country,” Singh tweeted.

Youth Congress leader and Chhattisgarh Cabinet minster TS Singh Deo tweeted that he has filed a complaint against Goswami in Raipur for “deliberately making inflammatory statements on his channel to invoke hatred among different communities and using derogatory language against Sonia Gandhi”. Youth Congress leader Srivatsa YB tweeted that cases have also been filed against Goswami in Maharashtra, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, etc.

Arnab alleges attack by Congress, calls Sonia Gandhi a ‘coward’

Republic TV founder and editor Arnab Goswami alleged he was attacked by Youth Congress workers on his way back from his studio in Mumbai. Republic World reported that the attack took place barely 500 metres away from Arnab’s house as he was driving back following his show, with his wife and Republic TV Editor Samyabrata Ray Goswami in their Toyota Corolla.

In a video, Goswami blamed Congress leaders for the attack, challening Congress president Sonia Gandhi and calling her a “coward”. He could be heard saying in the video: “At around 12:15am, I was driving back from studio with my wife. My car was overtaken by two people in two bikes. They turned to me, pointed at me, they started hitting my car and trying to break the windowpane,” he said. They were throwing some sort of liquid at the vehicle, he said. The attackers were accosted, and Goswami said the security personnel informed him they were Youth Congress workers sent specifically to assault him. “They had tailed me and they were given information by higher-ups to attack me. I want to tell you Sonia Gandhi, you are the biggest coward in the country right now. You have no guts to face me and I will hold you personally responsible. If anything were to happen to me, Sonia Gandhi will be responsible.”

In a news discussion on the Palghar lynching of Hindu seers, Arnab had attacked Sonia Gandhi’s silence, reportedly saying she was “happy” now and would not have been quiet if saints from minority community faced the attack. This had provoked criticism from numerous Congress leaders. Spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala alleging that it was “deeply disgraceful that PM & BJP eulogise this brand of TV anchors”

‘The Fifth Mountain’; a poetic and spiritual read

“Everything will happen as was written by the lord”, replied the prophet.

“There are moments when tribulations occur in our lives, and we cannot avoid them. But they are there for some reason.”

“What reason?”

“That is a question we cannot answer before, or even during, the trials. Only when we have overcome them do we understand why they were there.”

The bestselling author Paulo Coelho, takes us to the world of thoughts to reassess our own inner selves in order to fulfil the destiny bestowed upon us with daring credence through his book – The Fifth Mountain.
The story revolves around the life of a 23 year old Prophet Elijah who is forced to flee from his homeland and accept the magical inevitability of life. The trials and tribulations he faces become the harsh winds during his voyage through the ocean of life. And there are directions and visions from the angel of God like an island of hope for a shipwreck victim.

Even though the protagonist tried to run away from his destiny and tried to lead a normal life; again and again he was drawn by the magical realities around him towards what was written by the supreme hands. “He thought about the reason for his existence, and obtained no answer. He thought about where he should go, and discovered that he was surrounded.” There are moments when Elijah loses his hope and falls deep into the darkness of despair. But still we can see the sacred illustrations of life hitting him once more in order to usher him to the very meaning of his existence on earth. “Elijah listened attentively to what his soul was saying: ‘But no one can lose sight of what he desires. Even if there are moments when he believes the world and the others are stronger. The Secret is this: do not surrender’ “

The story with its prophetic tone and spiritual nature tells us about Elijah, who was a carpenter, forced to flee from Israel, his homeland, as the newly crowned princess; Jezebel ordered to execute all the prophets who worship the Lord. Fleeing from the land, he went to Zaraphath which is also called as Akbar and finds refuge in the house of a widow. Climbing up the fifth mountain which is the dwelling place of the the god of Baal and receiving a vision from his Angel out there and then saving son of the widow from death; he becomes a man of influence in Akbar. And when finally when the city of Akbar gets destroyed in the war against Assyrians, he starts to rebuild the city with the people left; widows, aged and children. And also teaches them to read and write. The story ends with him fleeing to the fifth mountain and remaining there, after the incident of him going back to the Homeland; he dethrones Jezebel and orders execution of all the prophets who betrayed the Lord.
The life of Elijah is an ocean of wisdom to look deep into ourselves and to recheck our own notions about the sacred truth called life.

A must read; poetic but spiritual work by Paulo Coelho.

Disability through an unpopular lens!

The whole system is designed to be ableist and that’s why the able-bodied feels that the need of persons with disabilities are secondary and that’s the reason why the needs, services, presence and performance of the disabled plurality becomes anomaly to the able-bodied.

Praseeda Sujatha

We are learning, unlearning, re-learning a lot of things which were normalised by the society. Still, there are a lot of things which need more engagement and discussion to bring about a critical discourse. One among such less spoken topic is disability, discourses on disability, politics of disability and so on. This article talks about a very common thing which we might have engaged or might be still engaging in, yet failed to look at it through a different lens.

From olden times to modern times, the able-bodied consider persons with disabilities as “receivers of sympathy/charity/services”, or to put it in simple terms, “the able-bodied” ‘give’ them services and “the disabled” receives it.  And here’s the whole question, “who are these able-bodied/abliest system to ‘give’ them services”? Isn’t it an inherent right of everyone to exercise their entitled rights? In that context, there are disabled activists, human right activists, social workers, NGO’s etc who are extensively working in this field to create new discourses and to bring about a rights-based approach in the field of disability.

On another note, there are many videos these days, where the disability has been used as “positivity spreading materials” to keep the non-disabled people motivated. Disability has also been used as slurs to degrade someone or something which is not right to the society, for example, using phrases like “are you deaf, are you dumb, are you blind or are you having any mental illness to act like this or even asking someone that ‘are you having a spine’” , is profoundly and inherently oppressive.

When the able-bodied people use statements like “If they can do that, why not us”, we have to understand that it is deeply problematic and also it is like you are giving the worst excuse for you being an abliest, and it is as equal as you being a casteist, racist, sexist, homophobe and what not. These are some instances where disability and lives of persons with disability have been merely capitalised and used as “Inspiration porn” (A term coined by Stella Young). You might ask me “what’s your problem, if the person with disability has no issues with it nor the persons who are motivated by it”, this is exactly where the problem lies, it’s not just the case of disability, almost all the privileged one’s engage in social service or motivational speeches because they have considered the marginalised as ‘unfortunate’, and thus privileged becoming the ‘saviours’. What if we don’t need that business here?

If one says it’s the failure of the state and the hierarchical and oppressive system, that the marginalised are still marginalised, most of the people tend to oppose and ignore the political and social reasons behind it. A lot of persons with disabilities consider their lives as positivity spreading stories because they themselves have internalised the fact that the world is nothing but an ableist world, where the maximum you can do is create stories out of their lives so that they can at least get attention which otherwise the society and state ignores to give them in terms of equity, equality, equal opportunities, rights, economic and social security, inclusivity etc.

Recently I was having an argument with my friend over this, he said “what is the problem with you, I have seen a boy with autism singing amazingly well, it’s god’s grace that the child sings and the child is the special child of god”, let us unpack what’s the actual issue with it, the first thing is the pre-conceived notion that the disabled people might not exhibit any skill/talent is problematic, when you romanticise the disability, it is also equally problematic. I’m not saying that you don’t need to pay attention to their talents, but try to ponder on it, why is it that the able-bodied become “extra” awestruck when child with intellectual disability, or any person with any disability exhibits any talent? Isn’t it an internalised stereotype that the disabled individuals “cannot practice any skill like the able-bodied”, is the real problem? What we have to understand is that almost everything we do is one or the other ‘skill’ and we are conditioned to believe that everyone has to do it like the able-bodied.

“The whole system is designed to be ableist and that’s why the able-bodied feels that the need of persons with disabilities are secondary and that’s the reason why the needs, services, presence and performance of the disabled plurality becomes anomaly to the able-bodied,” said Sabari, my friend, a disabled activist. It’s up to you to think on it. Also, when the able-bodied use terms as ‘normal’, ‘special child’ or ‘differently abled’ or even ‘divyangjan’ for that matter, it is also deeply problematic. Because, when the able-bodied use such terms, it’s like directly or indirectly “othering” the disabled people. Also, will the non-disabled would be agreeing to call them as “differently abled” because they have some or the other so called ‘ability’? I suppose NO.

Everyone have their own identities, some persons with disabilities might prefer addressing them as person with disability where the person becomes the first identity, while some others might prefer addressing as disabled individuals where the disability is their first identity, and it’s important to acknowledge and respect the identity as it is.

So, motivational speakers or any others who uses disability as their positivity spreading materials, if you are so much concerned about their lives, think about why there is such a disparity when it comes to positions in power and representation of persons with disabilities nationally and globally?

This sympathy bartering process might never end. All I wanted to say is, “This is not we expect or want”. I don’t know whether one would understand the layers of oppression and internalised issues with this. When would the able-bodied start considering persons with disabilities as independent agents without appropriating their voices? Remember, they are not the inspirational stories to keep the privileged ones motivated.
