Rain fell on Greenland’s ice sheet for the first time ever known; experts ring warning

Rain fell at the highest point on Greenland’s ice sheet — possibly for the first time — in an event Danish scientists on Monday said was most likely driven by climate change.

The rain was observed for several hours on August 14 at a measuring post more than 3,000 metres (9,800 feet) up on the sheet, the US Snow and Ice Data Center reported.

For rain to fall, temperatures must be above or just slightly below zero degrees Centigrade, signalling the risk that rising temperatures pose to the world’s second-largest ice sheet after Antartica.

“This is an extreme event as it may never have happened before,” Martin Stendel, a researcher at the Danish Meteorological Institute, told AFP.

“It’s probable that this is a sign of global warming.”

Temperatures have risen above freezing at the peak of the sheet only nine times in the past 2,000 years, he said.

Three of those events have been in the past 10 years — but on the previous two occasions, in 2012 and 2019, there was no rain, he said.

“We cannot prove whether it rained or not at the six occasions before but it’s very unlikely, which makes the rainfall we observed even more remarkable,” Stendel said.

The rain comes after a summer in which northern Greenland has experienced record-setting temperatures of more than 20 degrees.

This heat wave has seen the rate of melting of the ice sheet accelerate further.

Its retreat, which began several decades ago, began to speed up in 1990.

With a surface area more than three times that of France, the ice sheet covering Greenland locks up enough water to raise global sea levels by up to seven metres.

The melting is causing concern among scientists, as warming in the Arctic is faster than the global average.

According to a European study published in January, the melting of the Greenland ice sheet is expected to contribute to the overall rise in sea levels by 10 to 18 centimetres by 2100, 60 percent faster than the previous estimate.

Cristiano Ronaldo is back with dream double and Manchester United rises

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a dream return as a Manchester United player with a double as the Red Devils beat Newcastle 4-1 in front of a rocking Old Trafford on Saturday. Ronaldo now has 120 United goals to his name, but scored his first since leaving for Real Madrid 12 years ago to take Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men top of the Premier League table. United were made to work harder than expected for the three points, but were able to rely on Ronaldo’s predatory instincts to strike twice either side of Javier Manquillo’s well-worked equaliser.

Bruno Fernandes then sealed a day where Portuguese stars shone with a stunning long-range effort 10 minutes from time before Jesse Lingard rounded off the scoring in stoppage time.

United’s fortunes on the field have declined dramatically since Ronaldo’s departure with no Premier League or Champions League success since Alex Ferguson retired as manager in 2013.

His return was enough to generate a feverish atmosphere among 74,000 in attendance not seen at Old Trafford for many years.

The 36-year-old was serenaded with songs in his honour long before kick-off and even received celebrations of the goals he scored in a shooting drill in the warm-up.

Ronaldo’s arrival has added even more firepower to an already loaded selection of attacking options on offer to Solskjaer.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani resigns ahead of assembly election later next year

Vijay Rupani resigned as Chief Minister of Gujarat on Saturday in an unexpected turn of events ahead of an Assembly election in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state later next year.

Mr Rupani resigned, sources further said, after the party’s central leadership expressed dissatisfaction with his performance; they have called this a “course correction” by a party eager to change things around if it feels unsure in its state leadership, particularly with key elections due next year.

“… has been a five-year journey for development of Gujarat… under guidance of PM Modi. Now, to further develop the state, with new energy and power, I have decided to resign as Chief Minister.” Mr Rupani was quoted by news agency ANI.

“It is well known the BJP, as a party, keeps changing as per requirements… it is a speciality of our party that every worker delivers to the fullest, and I too will continue to work for the party with the same energy,” he added.

Mr Rupani’s resignation (and, by default, his cabinet’s) leaves the ruling BJP with three options – appoint a successor, allow the state to come under President’s Rule, or have an early election.

Sources have said at this point no decision has been taken on early polls and a change of guard – a new Chief Minister – is likely to be the strategy.

Senior leaders BL Santosh and Bhupendra Yadav are in Ahmedabad to discuss replacements.

Sources have said Mansukh Mandaviya, sworn in as the Union Health Minister in July, and Nitin Patel, who was Mr Rupani’s deputy, are possible replacements. Both Mr Mandaviya and Mr Patel have reached the party office in capital Gandhinagar, ANI reported.

Another possibility, other sources said, is Praful Khoda Patel, who is currently the Administrator for the union territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, and Lakshadweep.

Mr Patel was in the headlines in July after a series of controversial orders triggered massive protests in Lakshadweep and the mainland.

In the 2017 election the BJP claimed 99 of the state’s 182 Assembly seats – down 17 from 2012. The Congress won 77 seats – up 16 from the last polls.

Increase in GDP means price hike of Gas, Petrol and Diesel, says Rahul Gandhi

0

Congress’s Rahul Gandhi today attacked the Centre over the hike in petro prices, citing data for petrol, diesel and cooking gas. Over the last 7 years, the government has earned more than ₹ 23 lakh crore because of the rise of diesel, petrol and cooking gas, he said, claiming the funds from all this and the Goods and Services tax, are benefiting a handful of crony capitalists.

The increase in GDP, he equated with the rise of “gas, diesel and petrol prices”.

When the UPA left office, the price of LPG was ₹ 410 a cylinder, today it is ₹ 885 — a 116 per cent rise, Mr Gandhi said. The price of petrol has increased by 42 per cent and diesel has increased by over 55 per cent since 2014, he said.

“Today, people are giving the argument that these are dependent on international market. But let me highlight the fact that the international prices for these have fallen since 2014, but it has increased in India,”

Mr Gandhi said, drawing a parallel with 2014 when despite high petro price in the international market, prices were low in India.

Pointing to the condition of the economy, he said India is back at the place where it was in 1990, facing an economic catastrophe.

“At that time, the Congress government had changed the vision for India. But that is not happening now… The economic structure and strategy that ran from 1991 to 2012 is not working anymore. We accept that it stopped working in our time in 2012. But Narendra Modi came with the promise of changing all that. But where is the change?” he added.

Afghanistan falls to the Taliban again as the U.S.-backed Government collapses

Twenty years after being removed from power in a U.S.-led invasion, Taliban militiamen swept to into Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, on Sunday, facing little resistance from Afghan government forces.

Within hours, Afghanistan’s Washington-backed president had left the country and the flag at the U.S. Embassy had been lowered amid a hasty evacuation of diplomatic personnel.

Ashraf Ghani, Afghanistan’s president, said on Facebook that his was “a hard choice,” but that he decided to leave to prevent bloodshed. He signed off his post with “Long Live Afghanistan.” The Taliban released a statement saying they had entered the capital of 6 million people and were working to restore law and order.

On Saturday, the militia’s fighters took the last remaining government stronghold of Mazar-e-Sharif, followed quickly on Sunday by the city of Jalalabad, which lies just east of Kabul on a major road artery.

By Sunday, Kabul was a scene eerily reminiscent of the fall of Saigon in 1975 in the wake of the Vietnam War, as helicopters circled the U.S. embassy as its diplomatic personnel were under evacuation orders. The comparison to Vietnam was one that U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken was keen to dismiss: “This is not Saigon. We went to Afghanistan 20 years ago with one mission, and that mission was to deal with the folks who attacked us on 9/11 and we succeeded in that mission,” he told CNN’s State of the Union.

In an alert on Sunday, the U.S. embassy cautioned of reports that Kabul’s airport was “taking fire” and that “we are instructing U.S. citizens to shelter in place.” A U.S. military official told NPR the airport was closed to commercial aircraft as military evacuations continue.

Earlier, the White House had ordered about 5,000 troops to be sent to Afghanistan to provide security and assist in evacuations of U.S. personnel. The Pentagon confirmed on Sunday another 1,000 would head there as well.

The day’s events were a dramatic coda to America’s longest war, prompted by the Taliban’s refusal to hand over Osama bin Laden in the immediate aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Within weeks of the attacks on New York and Washington, D.C., U.S.-led forces invaded the country, toppling the Taliban by year’s end.

But that involvement stretched from months into years. Since then, more than 2,400 U.S. service members, some 3,800 American contractors, more than 1,100 other allied service members, and an estimated 66,000 Afghan national military and police have lost their lives due to the conflict, along with more than 47,000 civilians, according to Brown University’s Costs of War Project.

Muslim man thrashed in UP, asked to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’ as minor daughter tries to save him

Visuals have emerged of a 45 years old Muslim man being paraded through the streets of Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur amid chants of ‘Jai Shri Ram’, with his little daughter clinging to him and crying desperately for her father’s safety.

The disturbing visuals show that the man is assaulted in the presence of his child, and hit even while in custody of the police. Before the police breaks up the frenzied mob, the man is also seen being hit on his head by what appears to be a black helmet, the force of which causes him to fall on the ground.

According to a report by NDTV, the incident took place 500 metres from where the right-wing group Bajrang Dal held a meeting, in which they claimed that Muslims in the area were attempting to convert a Hindu girl in their locality. The incident is reported to have taken place right after the meeting.

Three accused – Ajay, Aman Gupta and Rahul Kumar – have been arrested in connection with the case. As per a statement by DCP Raveena Tyagi earlier, the police and PAC force were deployed to control the situation.
A case was filed on the complaint of the man against some known and unknown persons.

“Outsiders brought in to manhandle MPs, including women”: Opposition

0

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and nearly a dozen other opposition leaders gathered outside Parliament on Thursday to protest an abrupt end to the monsoon session and the alleged assault on women MPs.

They also called on Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu to lodge a complaint, and alleged “outsiders who were not part of Parliament security were brought in to manhandle opposition leaders and members, including women MPs”.

“Without any provocation… outsiders, who were not part of Parliament security, were brought in to manhandle opposition leaders and members, including women MPs who were only protesting the government’s conduct, highhandedness and muzzling of their voice,” a joint statement said.

The statement slammed the government for its “authoritarian attitude and undemocratic actions”, and accused it of “deliberately derailing” the monsoon session despite the opposition having “unanimously conveyed (the need) to discuss important national issues” like the Pegasus scandal.

Apart from Mr Gandhi and his party colleagues, NCP chief Sharad Pawar and the Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut were present. Leaders from the DMK, the Samajwadi Party, the RJD, the CPM and CPI, the Muslim League, the RSP and the Kerala Congress also attended today’s joint protest.

“Today we had to come out here to speak to you (the media) as we are not allowed to speak inside Parliament…. This is the murder of democracy,” Mr Gandhi said during the protest march.

“First time ever in the Rajya Sabha… MPs were beaten, pushed around. The Chairman says he is upset… so is the Speaker. But it is their responsibility to ensure the House functions” he said.

“As far as 60 per cent of the country is concerned… there has been no Parliament. The voice of 60 per cent has been crushed… and yesterday, in the Rajya Sabha, physically beaten,” Mr Gandhi added.

Sanjay Raut, a member of the Rajya Sabha, was quoted by news agency ANI as saying that the alleged physical bullying “felt like we were standing at the Pakistan border”.

However, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi has called the allegations “totally false”.

In a lengthy press conference addressed by seven Union Ministers, the government hit back and accused the opposition of making threats if more bills were introduced in the remainder of this session.

‘Anti-Muslim’ slogans raised at Jantar Mantar protest organised by Delhi BJP leader, FIR filed

0

The Delhi Police Monday registered an FIR against unknown persons a day after anti-Muslim slogans were allegedly raised at Jantar Mantar during a protest against ‘colonial era laws’.

“FIR has been registered under relevant sections of law. The investigation is in progress,” Deputy Commissioner of Police, New Delhi, Deepak Yadav said in a press statement.

The slogans were allegedly raised during a march titled ‘Colonial Laws & Make Uniform Laws’ at Jantar Mantar Sunday. According to the police, the organisers of the event didn’t have permission to carry out the rally.

The FIR has been filed in the Connaught Place Police Station under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups) and 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) of the Indian Penal Code apart from section 51 of Disaster Management Act for violation of Covid-19 guidelines.

Videos of the event were widely shared on social media in which individuals can purportedly be heard making inflammatory remarks against Muslims. They sparked outrage on Twitter.

“We are identifying the people who raised these slogans. We have taken all records of videos,” a senior police officer told ThePrint.

The march was organised by Supreme Court lawyer and former state BJP spokesperson Ashwini Upadhyay under the banner of ‘Bharat Jodo (Unite) Movement’. BJP leader Gajendra Chauhan was also present at the event that demanded implementation of a Uniform Civil Code for all.

The senior officer quoted above said that permission for the event had been denied. “However, later on, upon information that Upadhyay might take up an indoor venue, we made arrangements … hundreds of people turned up, higher than we anticipated.”

“We are identifying the ones that raised the slogans on the basis of videos available on social media and with the police. Strict action will be taken against the perpetrators,” the officer added.

Upadhyay, though, denied involvement or knowledge of the anti-Muslim sloganeering at the event.

Purported videos of the event showed some individuals calling for the killing of Muslims, and raising ‘Jai Shree Ram’ slogans.

The slogan “Hindustan mein rehna hoga toh ‘Jai Shree Ram’ kehna hoga (If you want to live in Hindustan, you must say ‘Jai Shree Ram’),” could be heard in one of the videos, purportedly of the event. In another similar video, people can be heard saying, “Muslims will be slaughtered, they will shout ‘Jai Shree Ram’.”

“With them on path of justice” Rahul Gandhi meets parents of 9 year-old rape victim in Delhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday met the parents of the nine-year-old girl who was allegedly raped, murdered and forcibly cremated in Nangal Rai area of Delhi Cantt.

“I spoke with the family, they want justice and nothing else. They’re saying that justice is not being given to them and they should be helped. We will do that. I have said that I am standing with them. Rahul Gandhi is standing with them until they get justice,” news agency ANI quoted Rahul Gandhi as saying.

However, some locals protested the visit of Rahul Gandhi, saying that the area’s councillor, who is also from Congress, hasn’t shown up yet.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said Rahul Gandhi had come to meet the parents of the girl and not to do politics.

Rahul Gandhi will raise the issue in Parliament, Surjewala added.

Sharing a report on the incident, Rahul Gandhi tweeted on Tuesday, “The daughter of a Dalit is also the daughter of the country”.

PM Modi is upset on Opposition for their conduct in Parliament

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, August 3, 2021, slammed opposition members for tearing papers in Parliament and making “derogatory” remarks on the way Bills have been passed as he accused them of insulting the legislature and the Constitution with their conduct.

Briefing reporters on Mr. Modi’s speech at the BJP parliamentary party meeting, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said the Prime Minister expressed anger at the conduct of some opposition members.

While a TMC Member in Rajya Sabha had torn the statement of IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on the Pegasus issue, several opposition members had torn papers in Lok Sabha and threw it in the air and towards the Chair.

A tweet of TMC leader Derek O’Brien criticising the manner of Bills’ passage in Parliament also drew Mr. Modi’s ire, Mr. Joshi and another Union Minister V. Muraleedharan told reporters, without naming the TMC member.
